Functional properties of pozzolanic Portland cement:
What is pozzolan?
In terms of their chemical composition, pozzolans are siliceous or
siliceous-aluminate materials that have an acidic state and a high affinity for
lime.
These materials themselves have little or no adhesive properties,
but their powder combines with calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) in the presence of
moisture at normal temperatures to create adhesive materials.
What
is pozzolanic cement?
To produce pozzolanic cement, a mixture of Portland cement clinker
and pozzolanic materials is ground in a cement mill and supplied as pozzolanic
cement.
According to Iranian National Standard № 3434, it is divided into the following two categories:
A - Pozzolanic Portland cement:
In this type of cement, pozzolanic materials constitute a minimum
of 5% and a maximum of 15% by weight of pozzolanic Portland cement. This cement
is used for general purposes in the preparation of mortar or concrete and is
marked with the symbol (PP).
B- Pozzolanic Portland cement - special:
In this type of cement, pozzolanic material constitutes a minimum
of 15% and a maximum of 40% of the weight of pozzolanic Portland cement. This
cement has the following characteristics and is marked with the symbol (P.P.V).
Mazandaran Cement Company started experimental production of
pozzolanic Portland cement by conducting numerous tests and using active
pozzolan approved by the authoritative experts of the Cement Industry Employers
Association and the Ministry of Industry and Mines and after receiving various
samples by the respected experts of the General Directorate of Standards and
Industrial Research of Mazandaran Province, it managed to obtain a license to
use a standard mark for the production of this type of cement, and it has the
ability to produce and supply this cement to the market.
Features of pozzolanic Portland cement
- The heat caused by the absorption of water (heat of hydration) is
small.
- It is resistant to chemical dissolved substances.
- In the first days (up to three days) it has low compressive
strength, but the final strength is high.
This cement is commonly used for making poured concrete and in
cases where the concrete is exposed to chemical attack conditions.
